That is the risk nvidia took with their monolithic approach when designing their chips vs AMD's multi-chip design. Charlie Demerjian was screaming about it for ages... now we see he was right. Also, 580 is only Fermi-done-right because TSMC fixed their broken 40nm. There's no merit going to nvidia for this... it would have been if they would have done their homework and deliver proper products to balance the market, but yes it's a FAIL.

So let me get this straight: The 580 is nothing else than what Fermi should of been at launch, the 570 is just a fully enabled GF104, and the 560 will be a slightly tweaked 460, and the dual-GPU card is going to need watercooling to even run? Fail, Nvidia, that's all I have to say. Which is bad, because now AMD can just price their cards where they want to...

It's absurd. A GF100x2 is next to impossible since the initial GF100 was almost unbuildable.

"HD 6970 or Geforce GTX 5x0 GX2" That's a typo, right? 6970 is Cayman single GPU. 6990 would be the dual-GPU variant that goes against GX2, or over actually.

They can go for 375W without breaking any standards, because the second 8-pin provides the extra 75W and not the pci-e slot, and I believe that's what they're actually aiming for. I don't know where these 400W rumors are coming from.

Nvidia suddenly show GTX580 news after a month of Radeon 6970 news... And release date also so rushing... So what the value of Quality vs Output? Quality = more time. rushing output = reduce some quality. If you all professionally.. You will be able to think before buy the GTX580.

@eddman There is a PCI-SIG standard that restricts the power consumption to 300W. Something to do with strain on the slot, however depends on what they call "power consumption". Nvidia always under calculate their TDP based on "typical load" and not full load, hence why their 250W TDP Fermi's could 300-310W. And yes you can pull more amps through a 8 pin PCIe cable then just 150W, however just they are officially rated at 150W.

75W pci-e + 150W 8-pin + 150W 8-pin = 375W And why you think they won't go beyond 300W? They've been increasing max power consumption constantly since radeon 9700 pro.
