Ouch. Just checked myself, I hadn't disabled auto-updates and though I did get a notice that a new version had been downloaded a few days ago I were simply able to cancel the installation. Running 4.2.0.187, in case the build numbers matter.

I too was running 4.2 till a few days ago when it FORCED the upgrade even through I had disabled updating. The skype forums confirmed this has been happening to a lot of people running 4.2 and earlier recently. Apparantly skype consider it within their right to force it upon us to ensure quality of service.

Filehippo to the rescue, they've archived old releases quite far back. 4.2 and 3.8 being quite popular. Running 4.2 myself, as that was the last version before the UI exploded.
