Antilles, Radeon HD 6990 is Q1 2011

Dual chip Radeon HD 6000
We got confirmation that Radeon HD6990, AMD's dual-chip board codenamed Antilles won't surface until Q1 2011, and we know that we've said before. This is an update. Despite original plans to launch the dual-GPU card based on Northern Islands in Q4 2010, it looks like AMD has decided to postpone this product till Q1 2011.

We don’t know if this is a business decision or that they have some issues but it doesn’t look like we will see Nvidia's dual chip card this year either.

AMD's graphics partners are not happy as they will miss the Xmas shopping spree before these cards arrive, but traditionally this part of market will wait for its product as a single chip is simply not an option for them.

You can only imagine how hot these card can end up as they will have two massive chips to power, but I guess this market will forgive the slight noise as long as the card perform as they are expected.

Cayman-based Radeon HD 6970 and HD 6950 should be the last cards to launch in 2010 and everything else follows next year.

These are expected news but what about Cayman? I am getting anxious about it. We have 1 week remaining and we still havent confirmed anything except 2GB or ram on 6970 and that they will be more expensive than 58xx. Will we be able to buy the card before the new year? What about specs? 96 or 120TMUs? Anyway it would be a great gift. :-)

That's in theory in 3 weeks time, so I can wait.

We all knew that this would never happen in 2010

3 weeks ? Your red eyes seem to be clouding the fact that Q1 goes up to March 2011...

My guess is with how hot and power hungry the 470, 480, 570 & 580 were and how nVidia has apparently thrown any efforts towards maintaining efficiency with power out the window, AMD fans won't complain that much. As for me, I'll stick with my dual 460's for now. I'm in no hurry to waste my money.

What's the point of this newsbit? Just to say that HD6990 is hot and noisy? Well gee Fuad, if it has two chips on the same board of course it gets hot. Fuad seems to be pissed when AMD launches a card that wipes the floor with GTX580.

Q1?

That's an update, we knew so far it woud be launched in January 2011.

I'm not concerned though since everbody prefers single GPU cards this days, that's why so many praise nVidia and their GTX 580.

The battle will be between GTX 580, GTX 570 and HD 6970, HD 6950.

That was one dumb statement!

Antilles is not a best seller... it's an ultra-enthusiast card for rich kids who got dads with deep pockets, but that aside it's for tournament overclockers that want the most pints possible out of a card.

And partners upset at AMD? They've been having the best selling DX11 chips on the market in millions for a year now... and Cayman is just around the corner upping those numbers again till next year the same time. They have nothing to be mad at, buddy... get off that acid and start writing something worth reading.

I figured after the 580 came out and amd realized their unreleased caymen had already been beat, they would of lit their warehouse on fire to claim insurance money and start over. Maybe they did and thats why they pushed the release date. hmmmmmmm
