Seagate launches 2.5" hybrid

Seagate has announced the launch of its first hybrid hard drive dubbed Momentus 5400 PSD where PSD stands for Power Saving Drive.

The new hybrid drive will be available in capacities of 80, 120 and 160 GB. As a hybrid hard drive, it comes with 256MB of integrated flash memory. The flash memory is used for the Superfetch which predicts the most frequently used data and store in there. This feature called ReadyDrive is only supported in the Windows Vista OS.

The hybrid drives feature a lower power consumption, and that is the main reason for releasing the 2.5inch drive before the desktop version. According to the ExtremeTech website, which did an extensive explanation of the hybrid drives, desktop, server and consumer hybrids from Seagate will come a bit later.
