7,200RPM and near silent operation

Toshiba has announced a new flagship 2.5” high performance drive, which goes under the name of MK4058GSX. The new MK4058GSX is a real monster with 400GB of storage space and it spins at 7,200RPM. As an added bonus, Toshiba was able to cut the acoustic noise during seeks by 2dB for near silent operation and it uses less power than the previous generation of drives.

The leap to 400GB in this form factor was made possible by Toshiba by boosting the areal density to an incredible 477Mbit/mm2. Of course, when you couple this with a 7,200RPM speed, you have a high performance drive that is targeted at applications that need both speed and large storage in the 2.5” form factor.

Toshiba did not announce a price for the new MK4058GSX or a potential release date for the new drive. They did say that production would start in August for the other capacities in the product family, but the 400GB model is not targeted for mass production until September.
