Rivals on the same path after ITU decision
The International Telecommunications Union decided in a decision announced on October 19th that the WiMax derived technology will be included in the IMT-2000 set of standards. The announcement puts WiMax and 3G on pretty much equal footing.
The IMT-2000 is a global standard set forth by the ITU that sets the standards for radio interfaces used for advanced wireless communication systems. The decision to add WiMax should increase the chance of global deployment of the technology in the 2.5-2.69GHz band to deliver wireless broadband Internet within urban and rural areas.
Sprint/Nextel has plans to deploy WiMax over the next couple of years in the U.S. in hopes of being able to deliver a national network that, unlike typical Wi-Fi wireless, will offer more range and coverage, particularly in rural areas where broadband Internet deployment continues to be a challenge.
