What is a BlackBerry Seawolf?

Could be the 9110 that might be headed to AT&T

One thing that we can say for the RIM folks is that they have some very interesting code names that they use during their product development cycles. A source told us today of a new code name that we had not heard before, which is Seawolf.

According to what we have been able to uncover, Seawolf is very likely the code name for the AT&T version of the BlackBerry Kickstart, which is also the 9100 if our sources are correct. So, Seawolf is said to be the BlackBerry 9110 that RIM is working on for AT&T; it is basically a Kickstart 9100 that is coming to T-Mobile in the U.S. with the addition of GPS support.

While we know that the Kickstart will be going to T-Mobile first in the U.S., it does stand to reason that the exclusive will be for a limited time, and a GPS version of the Kickstart coming to AT&T as soon as the T-Mobile exclusive ends is a strong possibility.

Why T-Mobile would not want to get the Kickstart with the GPS is not really a mystery as the GPS version of the Kickstart would cost more money. One way to insure that the Kickstart launch is successful and increase the adoption rate is to keep the cost down at launch as much as possible.

Still, the Seawolf would be very appealing if the Kickstart launch at T-Mobile is successful; and it could be a good move by AT&T to lock into a deal should the phone prove to be hot. Still, the Kickstart will represent RIM’s first attempt at a “flip-style” phone and it is anyone’s guess how interested consumers will be in a flip-phone BlackBerry, but initial reaction is positive and that is always a good sign.

As for Seawolf availability outside the U.S., it has been suggested that the odds are good that if T-Mobile does not pick it up in Europe then they will already be selling the Kickstart with their U.S. counterparts.
