Current owners likely to be very unhappy

RIM knows a good thing when they see it, and the sales of the BlackBerry Bold 9700 have been strong and perhaps even better than expected. The device (which was developed under the codename of Onyx) appears to be getting a slight revision, and our sources up in the Great White North tell tales of an Onyx 2 that is currently in development.

From what we hear, the BlackBerry Bold 9700a isn’t much different from the current model. After all, why would you mess with a good thing? Well, the answer is that you mess with a good thing when you need to upgrade it to better allow the next version of your OS to run on it. That’s right: the Onyx 2 (or the Bold 9700a if you prefer) is basically a memory upgrade for the unit to 512MB of RAM.

Beyond the extra memory, RIM is going to throw in an upgrade to a 5 megapixel camera and OpenGL device support. While we have no word on when this will drop, we seem certain that it will be sooner rather than later. The price is expected to be the same, but you can be sure that RIM will be eager for carriers to ditch their remaining inventory before the new version ships, as it is all but a given that sales will die for the older 9700 once the revised version is released.

So, if you recently purchased a BlackBerry Bold 9700 or already own a Bold 9700, what does this mean for you in relation to getting OS 6 for your older 9700? To be honest, we just don’t know. Rumors are suggesting that the older 9700 will be able to run OS 6 with no problems, but you just will not have that much free space on it after OS 6 is loaded onto the device. We don’t know this to be gospel yet, but we suspect that if the older 9700s don’t get OS 6, there are going to be a lot of people that are very unhappy.
