Crowned as fastest selling PC game of all time

Blizzard is heaping on the praise about how well the World of Warcraft Expansion pack titled the Wrath of the Lich King sold on launch day. According to Blizzard, the 2.8 million copies that the title sold on launch day make it the fastest selling PC game of all time.

The 2.8 million copies sold of the Lich King sold beats the old record holder, which was the Burning Crusade, the first World of Warcraft expansion pack. The Burning Crusade sold an impressive 2.4 million copies when it launched in 2007.

The fact that the Lich King was launched simultaneously on a near enough global scale also had to help Blizzard achieve these numbers. It also didn’t hurt that Blizzard was able to get over 15,000 retailers to have stores open at midnight when the title launched. The combination of things seems to have made the stars line up to make the entire launch quite successful.

With over 11 million players that are active playing WoW it is really no wonder that the launch numbers are so impressive. Blizzard expects to add to the total of players playing the game as it expects many players to come back to start playing WoW again so that they can experience the latest expansion pack.

Our take on the sales of Lich King is that it does just go to prove that gaming on the PC isn’t dead yet, no matter how many people try to pronounce that it is at an end. Warcraft fever strikes again and we are sure that many will be taken in by what the latest expansion pack has to offer.
