With the closure of Free Radical future cloudy at best

While Star Wars Battlefront III has remained one of the main topics of what we like to call, “the unannounced, but we know they are working on it...” titles in the pipeline. With the recent closure of Free Radical studios earlier this month the future of the unannounced title appears to be cloudy, at best.

According to various sources in the shadows, the studio was engaged in collaboration on Star Wars Battlefront III when time just ran out due mostly in part to LucasArts being unhappy with the direction that the title was taking, coupled with the length of time that the project had been in development.

Pandemic Studios developed the first two Star Wars Battlefront titles for a variety of platforms, but the PSP version, which was called Star Wars Battlefront Renegade Squadron, had been developed by Rebellion Software. Several sources are now claiming that Rebellion has taken over the entire Star Wars Battlefront III.

We have reached out to a variety of our shadow dwellers and the best that we can tell is that while some work has been done on Star Wars Battlefront III, it is at least unclear if the project has been green lighted by LucasArts to move forward. While some 3D artwork did show up on the Internet and has since been pulled, the artwork was branded as Star Wars Battlefront III and was done in 2007, and it was done by an artist that worked at Free Radical.

Best case is that we will see some sort of an announcement during E3 or GDC time frame later this year, but the lack of solid confirmation that the development of the project will continue at Rebellion means that we will have to take a wait and see approach.
