id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead has confirmed that the company had hired veteran fantasy novelist Graham Joyce to work on the new script for Doom 4.

Joyce has published 14 novels as well as 26 short stories. Three of the novels that he has published have already been optioned for the movie rights. Joyce is the recipient of four British Fantasy Awards, the Imaginaire Award, as well as a World Fantasy Award for his writings.

While Doom 4 was announced in May of 2008, beyond the fact that we know that it will be powered by the id Tech 5 engine and is being targeted for release on the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3, not much else is known about the upcoming release. The impressive id Tech 5 engine is also being used to power the upcoming driving shooter title, Rage, that is believed will ship at some point this year, according to knowledgeable sources.

With the announcement that Joyce would be working on the script, the company said that Doom 4 would follow the thesis from the previous installments in the Doom series. As with all id Software titles, no release time frame was given, other than the usual ‘it will ship when it is done.’
