EA says Wii to receive more focus

Delays announced for several upcoming titles

With mounting losses at Electronic Arts, the company has reaffirmed its decision to increase the amount of development for Nintendo Wii. The company is planning to devote half of their development efforts toward the Wii platform moving forward.

The goal of this move will be to rival Nintendo on its own platform and to gain the most attention of the third party developers supporting the platform. To this end the company is planning a new Tennis franchise for the Will platform which will be part of the EA Sports product line. In addition, the company will be creating new titles that will be part of the newly created EA Sports Active product line that will take advantage of the Wii’s unique controllers and balance board to leverage consumer fascination with fitness titles on the platform.

The company is also planning to bring new Wii customized versions of franchise titles such as Dead Space to the platform, while at the same time developing unique versions of franchise titles such as the recently announced Need for Speed: Nitro that will be a Wii exclusive.

The news that the company will be shifting so many resources toward the Wii is not really a surprise, as many continue to cite a lack of software for the platform as the major shortcoming of it. With Wii leading in sales and many other developers neglecting the platform, this does present an opening for EA to dominate third party software sales on the Wii.

However, it is still strange that the company is willing to invest this much into a platform that is less than next generation, but the company seems to think that it is responding to a niche that will set it apart from other software developers, which will in turn lead to more sales.

In addition to all of the news about refocusing their efforts on the Wii, the company also announced that The Godfather II, The Sims 3, and Dragon Age: Origins have all been delayed. No additional release information was given.

EA also has announced that head count reductions will continue to achieve a target of about 11 percent or another 1,100 employees. The company feels that the cuts are necessary in order to continue to lower operating expenses for fiscal 2010. The company was a bit unclear if any of these 1,100 employees to be laid off were included in the recent studio layoffs that have already been made companywide.
