If your Email address expires, you start over

A weird discovery has been made that involves users losing their Xbox Live accounts. It seems that if the Windows Live ID Email address that you used to register your Xbox Live Account expires and you can no longer access it, regardless of if you have the profile on your hard drive or not, you could lose all of your achievements as well as your Gamertag.

Some free Email accounts are set to expire after a period of inactivity and when this happens, the Email account is deleted and recycled at some point in the future. The bottom line is that if you allow the Email account associated with your Windows Live ID to expire, you could be left with no other option than to create a new Gamertag and account.

Of course, users that have a lot of achievements and are losing them because of this are extremely disgruntled, to say the least. While it will still allow you to play content that you downloaded offline, with Silver status, it will not allow you to upgrade to Gold. If you decide to create a new Gamertag, you will not be taking your achievements with you because they are non-transferable.

Microsoft is investigating the situation and seeing what can be done. As of right now they are recommending that if you have a problem that you call customer service in your region.

While the problem has only affected a few so far, the best advice we can give you is don’t let your Email account expire and keep an account that you will always have access to.
