Microsoft working to address the issue

Microsoft seems to be going on the offensive trying to set the record straight about the loss of Xbox Live Gamertags due to expired Email addresses and lack of activity on their Windows LIVE ID. Microsoft now claims that an Xbox Live Gamertag is only unrecoverable from a system when the associated Windows Live ID has become dormant and has been deleted from all Xbox 360 consoles.

From what we have been able to understand the problem only really happens when you don’t sign into Xbox.com or another Web site that uses a Windows LIVE ID such as Hotmail. This could lead to a condition where the Windows Live ID could go into a dormant condition from lack of use. So, as long as you sign into Xbox.com with your Window Live ID every so often, you will never see this problem.

Even if your Windows Live ID goes into a dormant condition, you can still use and access Xbox Live and earn achievements. Of course, you can use your dormant Windows Live ID to perform account management.

Currently, to prevent the possibility of any problem Microsoft recommends that users log into their Windows Live ID at least once every four months to prevent the possibility of a problem. In the meantime, Microsoft is working on a solution that will allow you to re-link your Gamertag back to your new Windows Live ID should it become dormant. No timetable has been announced for the release of this update.
