Download service to open April 5th

Nintendo will launch the DSiWare application and download service in the U.S., which will take place starting April 5th.

While the service has been live in Japan since November 2008, the launch of the DSiWare service is being timed with the actual launch of the DSi, which will be available in limited quantities in both black and blue on April 5th, as well. Those that purchase a DSi between now and October 5th will also receive 1,000 Nintendo DSi points to spend in the DSiWare store.

The new DSi features two cameras that are built-in to the device as well as a SD card slot for storage, and in addition the DSi does offer larger screens than were included with the last generation DS. The DSi Browser, which is basically a customized and enhanced version of the Opera Internet browser tailored for the DSi, will continue to be offered at no charge.

At launch the DSi will get six launch titles, including WarioWare: Snapped!, which is a collection of minigames that use the DSi cameras; Brain Age Express: Math, a math-focused edition of the popular Brain Age series; Birds & Beans, that is based on Pyoro bean-catching game from WarioWare; Master of Illusions Express: Funny Face, that is a lighter version of the Master of Illusion game that offers a single card trick; and finally, the Skip developed Art Style: Aquia, which is an underwater puzzle themed game.

According to local retailers that we have spoken with, pre-orders for the DSi have been quite brisk, with many users trading in their old DS units toward the new DSi. Some retailers have expressed the opinion that they are likely to run out of inventory, as quantities of the DSi are already a bit tighter than expected.
