According to DisplaySearch research, one in five laptops shipped in Q1 were, in fact, netbooks.
Acer is still dominating the netbook market, with a 30.5 percent market
share, and has outsold closest rival Asus by almost double. Overall,
however, Hewlett Packard is the top player in the laptop market, with a
24.1 percent share and 7.3 million units shipped.
About 45 percent of all netbooks were sold in EMEA, while North America
trailed with 26 percent. Analysts attribute the success in Europe to
telecom subsidies and payment plans.
In the laptop market the gap shrinks, and EMEA accounts for 38 percent,
while North America accounts for 30 percent. Acer has overtaken Dell to
become the second largest laptop vendor. Toshiba and Lenovo are in
fourth and fifth place respectively.
Without netbooks, the global laptop market would have shrunk by 19
percent year-on-year. However, the cheap toys propped up the numbers,
and the decline is just 3 percent.
