HTC Droid Incredible to receive Android 2.2 on August 18th

Adobe Flash Player 10.1, performance improvements and more

According to a recent Mashable report, HTC Incredible owners have reason to rejoice this Wednesday, as everyone's favorite red themed US telecom provider Verizon is going to start rolling out the yogurt-themed Android update over the air starting August 18.

Sources at Verizon claim to have already installed the Android 2.2 Froyo update on their Droid Incredible smartphones, according to the report. Over the past month and a half, the OS update has been making its rounds on a variety of highly sought after Android smartphones from Verizon and Sprint, including the EVO 4G, the Nexus One and the Motorola Droid.

The Android 2.2 Froyo update includes new software features that many insist will provide Google-based smartphones with more leverage over the Apple iPhone. These features include native support for GPU-accelerated Adobe Flash Player 10.1, significantly improved JavaScript performance, portable WiFi hotspot tethering (support varies by carrier), the ability to record 720p HD videos, and two-way push sync functionality with Chrome-to-Phone.

Other reports around the net indicate that the HTC Droid Incredible will be Verizon's first Droid smartphone to feature mobile hotspot tethering functionality. Unfortunately, the carrier will be offering the service for an additional $20 per month on top of the data plans customers are already paying. In short, we wouldn't be surprised to witness an overwhelming rebellion on Wednesday revealing Droid Incredible owners turning to YouTube video tutorials and blog guides on how to root their smartphones. We expect many will take advantage of single-payment tethering solutions similar to MiWi 4.0 on jailbroken iPhones.

As a bonus for installing Android 2.2 on their devices, Droid Incredible owners are also rumored to receive a new bootup animation depicting the red Droid eye popularly depicted on television advertisements.
