Nvidia announces high performance ARM core

CES 2011:
Project Denver for HPC even servers
Nvidia is designing a high performance ARM core and the codename is Project Denver.

This has nothing to do with Tegra, as Tegra will remain reserved for the mobile market and Nvidia's Denver processors will go after PCs, servers and supercomputers.

It uses same compilers, same tools for ARM. So now, with the likes of Apple, Google and Microsoft supporting ARM, the industry we know it might change and move to more ARM and less x86. Of course, this transition will be anything but fast and x86 is here to stay, but new ARM processors could easily gain a foothold in certain niche markets.

So, officially there won't be an x86 part from Nvidia, at least not now.

Because Intel hates competition, consumers, and pretty much everyone except for themselves.

No ,just Intel ,AMD is licenced by Intel ,they hold the patent for X86

On the other hand AMD owns the patents for x86-64, which Intel license.

They're more or less forced to license to each other at this point.

Man I hope this will hurt Intel. Not much .. but I hope they loose all their mobile market share to AMD's Fusion and ARM along with ImaginationTech graphics. That would be nice. And a revival of VIA through good Nano & Nano X2 sales would also be a good thing.

This will go nowhere on desktops and typical servers, ARM is too slow. ARM simply gets stomped on by a Core i5-2500. The amount of design it would take to get an ARM core to go that fast would mean it is no longer an ARM core. It's like comparing an immature Pentium MMX core to an i5. ARM is designed specifically for lower power systems and intentionally uses a simple architecture.

The only reason Nvidia is doing this is to piss off Intel. If Intel licenses x86 to Nvidia they get a share of the money made. Intel makes nothing if Nvidia is selling ARM chips that compete against theirs. Nvidia wants to use this as a bargaining chip to get a x86 license.

Tegra 2 = not even out yet, and all the comments (here) are trashing it.

Fusion = not even out yet, and half the comments are loving it.

Tegra is on its second generation of Tegra with Tegra 2, with already word about Tegra 3 in late 2011.

AMD Fusion (version 1) has yet to be demonstrated.

Where did i make the wrong turn to end up in this psychotic realm?

ARM would get stomped by an Atom. What ARM is for is providing good performance at very low power consumption.

The big question is, why isn't AMD doing anything like this? All they've done is focus on the flat PC market and a decent server market. However, their chances to compete with intel in those markets are low to say the least.

Did you just compare the latest ARM CPU to an i5 2500?

The scariest part for Intel (in relation to Moorestown) is that none of these apps (iphone, android, palm) run on x86 hardware. While there are still more x86 applications than iPhone or Android apps, there are more smartphone friendly apps running on ARM architectures than x86.

So you were saying?
