Syrians plan demos on Facebook, Twitter

by on02 February 2011

The revolution will not be televised
Droves of Syrians have joined a Facebook page calling for mass demonstrations in Damascus later this week. The call for antigovernment demos went out on Twitter as well.

Although Facebook is banned in Syria, tech savvy users find it relatively easy to access through proxies. The organizers don't expect to see mass unrest similar to Egypt or Tunisia and they don't believe the domino effect will spread to Syria.

Activists also noted that some of the calls for demonstrations came from Syrian expats, limiting their effectiveness. After all tweeting or posting rants on Facebook from the comfort of one's home is hardly the same as charging riot police through clouds of teargas.
