Apple’s A5 costs 66% more than Tegra 2

by on15 March 2011

Worth every penny it seems
Apple’s new A5 processor appears to be quite pricey compared to the competition, but it also incorporates some advanced features and delivers top notch performance.

The A5 uses Samsung new and costly 46nm Low Power DDR2 memory and it features variable clock speeds to keep power consumption low. It reportedly costs $25, some $10 more than Nvidia’s Tegra 2 processor used in most new Android tablet designs.

However, Apple has a habit of ordering millions of units of just about anything, including processors, hence the price could go down in coming months. The A5 will probably be used in upcoming iPhone and iPod products, along with the iPad 2.

The A5 is produced by Samsung, the very same company that recently ordered a bunch of Tegra 2 processors for its tablet lineup. You can check out the juicy details here.
