Acer, the world's fourth largest global PC manufacturer by marketshare, has recently announced that its ultrabook sales will account for roughtly 25 to 35-percent of its total notebook sales in 2012.

Sales of the company's first-generation ultrabook, the Acer Aspire S3, totaled between 250,000 and 300,000 units in the three months spanning Q4 2011 shortly after it launched in September 2011. According to Acer Chairman JT Wang, the company expect sales of its second-generation S5  ultrabook to be even stronger as it will coincide with Intel's official demarkation of 2012 being the "year of the ultrabook."

Nevertheless, the company's total shipments for 2012 are expected to post a year-over-year growth of 10-percent. We believe this estimate is an accurate representation of the potential Acer's Aspire S5 has in the marketplace as being the "world's thinnest ultrabook." This special characteristic will give the company leverage for at least the next two quarters until the second half of 2012 when Apple is expected to announce a new generation MacBook Air lineup.
