Smartbook serves up €399 Tegra 3 tablet

by on21 March 2012

Galaxy Tab 10.1 design, ICS on board

Remember Smartbook? The German outfit came to our attention a couple of years back, when it was a bit miffed that vendors started calling ARM based netbooks smartbooks. Other than that, we really did not know much about the company, and we still don’t.

However, Smartbook is now trying to get some attention for all the right reasons, as it is jumping into the tablet market with a high-end 10.1-inch Tegra 3 tablet. The Smartbook Power Pad was shown off at Cebit and European retailers have started listing it for €399.

It might look familiar, and it should. It is basically Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1, but unlike the Sammy it packs a Tegra 3 SoC, 1GB of memory, 16GB of storage and Android 4.0. The price seems fair, but it is entering a heavily contested market segment, so we don’t expect it to be very successful. Still, if you for some reason need a quad-core tablet on a budget, it is worth looking into.
