It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the PC market is in trouble, but the good people of IDC have taken some time to quantify the slump.
According to IDC’s latest data for Q4 2012, the PC market saw a 6.4 percent decline year-on-year. What’s more, the decline came during the holiday season and Windows 8 doesn’t seem to have helped much, although retailers rushed to clear Windows 7 inventory.
The top five PC vendors were HP, Lenovo, Dell, Acer and Asus. HP’s unit shipments dropped just 0.6 percent, while Lenovo did quite well in spite of the slump, with 8.2 percent of growth year-on-year. Dell and Acer dropped 20.8 and 28.2 percent respectively, while Asus gained 5.6 percent.
IDC hopes the PC market will pick up in 2013, as Windows 8 matures and cheaper ultrabooks start to enter the fray.
