Gates admits Microsoft’s mobile strategy was awful

Stating the obvious

Microsoft founder Bill Gates has finally admitted that Microsoft’s mobile strategy was a failure.

During an interview with CBS, Gates said Microsoft failed to create enough technological breakthroughs under Steve Ballmer’s leadership, although he went on to praise Ballmer’s efforts. He argued that a lot of things were done right under Ballmer’s leadership, including Windows 8, and to a lesser extent Bing and Surface.

Gates went on to admit that Microsoft’s mobile strategy was bad and that the company did not get ahead of the competition and seize an early lead. When asked why, Gates said it is “too complicated” to explain.

"We didn't miss cellphones, but the way that we went about it didn't allow us to get the leadership. So it's clearly a mistake," said Gates.

Microsoft is still struggling in mobile. Windows RT is not doing well, and although Windows phones are getting very positive reviews, they are not selling well, either.
