Third Dragon Age & Mass Effect both use Frostbite 3

by on29 March 2013

DICE engine to power both, so Wii U release unlikely

As rumored previously, BioWare has now confirmed that they are moving to the DICE-developed Frostbite 3 engine. With this move, both Dragon Age 3: Inquisition and Mass Effect 3 are being created using this engine.

The news was confirmed by a tweet by Aaryn Flynn, the BioWare Edmonton and Montreal general manager. Originally, the rumor mill picked up on the fact that BioWare was moving to use Frostbite for future releases; but only now is it confirmed that it will be the latest generation of the engine.
With the move to Frostbite comes the reality that has been confirmed by Patrick Back at DICE: currently, Frostbite isn’t running on the Wii U. While the specifics are not known, it is generally thought (based on what can be pieced together from the comments of others at DICE) that the engine has not been ported to the Wii U platform and currently there are no plans to do so. That, of course, is at least for right now.

The confirmation of no Frostbite engine currently on the Wii U platform makes the possibility of Wii U versions of Dragon Age: Inquisition and Mass Effect 3 unlikely. DICE also confirmed at GDC that the studio had no plans for a Wii U version of Battlefield 4, which is no surprise now that we know there is no Frostbite engine running on the Wii U platform.
