Rear light on DualShock 4 a concern?

by on09 July 2013

Unfortunately, cannot be disabled

Sony has confirmed that the rear facing light on the new DualShock 4 controller for the PlayStation 4 cannot be disabled. This was confirmed in the Twitter feed of Shuhei Yoshida, the President of Sony Studios Worldwide.

The rear facing light on the DualShock 4 has been the topic of much discussion after it was announced. According to Sony, the light is able to be controlled in games and have different functionality based on the title. Because of the fact that the light is programmable, it boggles the mind why Sony could not make it so that it could be turned off.

Concerns about battery life have also been raised by some; we suspect that the light uses some sort of low power LEDs, so we doubt that this will actually be an issue. Some have suggested that if players really want to shut the light off, it could be disabled simply by putting a piece of electrical tape over it – and problem solved.

Perhaps with as much discussion that has surrounded the light, maybe Sony will address it down the road; but in the meantime, we at least know that Sony has heard the comments about it and perhaps they will take that into consideration for future revisions.
