Is Tomb Raider running at 60fps on PS4?

by on24 January 2014

Publisher not confirming a difference exists

It seems like we have been down this road before. Word is now that the Square Enix marketing machine was right: the Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition for the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 does run at 1080p at least 30fps. But that might not be the entire story.

According to a number of sources, the PlayStation 4 version apparently runs at 1080p at 60fps, while the Xbox One version is at 1080p but only runs at 30fps or a little more, depending on where you are in the game.

Square Enix has responded to the rumors by issuing a statement saying that "Both platforms offer the same outstanding Tomb Raider experience. Delivering the core Tomb Raider gameplay at native 1080p and running at 30fps was always our primary goal, given the type of experience Tomb Raider is and the exploration we want players to do. Anything beyond 30fps for this version is gravy."

Sounds a little fishy to us, but confirmation from executive producer Scot Amos that the PS4 version does run at 1080p/60fps isn’t helping matters. Our sources are telling us that while they are not saying it publicly, the Xbox One version is running at 1080p, but it is getting 30fps or a little more.

Does it really matter? Well, it depends who you ask. Many have continued to bash the Xbox One, saying that it can’t do 1080p at 60fps, which actually is false because Forza 5 is doing that very thing. Does it diminish game play? Well, that also depends who you ask. If they are at the same resolution and look the same, the higher frame rate could be a benefit in game play. Still, it just seems to us that the lack of optimization experience on the Xbox One is partly to blame, as well as hardware resources being held in reserve.
