Vanilla Android is the opium of the people

Google’s Nexus 5 has joined the party comrades. The flagship phone got a red paint job and the new version will hit the Play Store today.

The spec and the price remain unchanged - $349 will buy you the 16GB version, with an 8-megapixel camera, Qualcomm 600 processor, 2GB of RAM and an 8-megapixel camera. The 32GB version costs $399.

The Nexus 5 is already available in black and white, but the vibrant red version looks quite a bit more flashy. This usually wasn’t the case with Nexus devices. For years you could get them in any colour, as long as it was black.

White versions of the Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus did eventually show up, but they merely featured different back covers. The original Nexus 7 was showcases in white and Google handed out white samples to the press, but only black models went on sale.

Oddly enough, Motorola does have quite a few colour options for the Moto G and Moto X, but Motorola is no longer Googlerola. It’s Motorolenovo, or Lenovorola now, so in a way the crimson Nexus 5 is more or less the only colourful Google phone on the market.
