Samsung announces curved Gear S smartwatch

3G on board

Samsung has launched yet another smartwatch, but the Gear S is a bit different from the Korean giant’s previous models. It was rumoured and leaked as the Gear Solo, but the official name is Gear S and it has two features that set it apart from previous designs.

The Gear S is actually a proper phone rather than a smartwatch. It has 3G connectivity and it can be used to make calls or to enable data connectivity sans smartphone tether. The second novel feature is its screen – a 2-inch curved Super AMOLED panel with a relatively high resolution of 480x360.

Under the bonnet you’ll find an unnamed dual-core processor clocked at 1GHz, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of storage and a 300mAh battery. Samsung says it should deliver up to two days of battery life. We are not sure what heavy 3G use will do to the battery life though.

The Gear S sports WiFi 802.11n, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, heart rate monitor and a range of other features. The Gear S appears to be a Tizen device rather than an Android Wear affair. There is still no word on pricing or availability.

If you plan on using it as a phone, Samsung has another neat toy – the Gear Circle. It is basically a wireless headset with a magnetic mechanism to keep it in place when it is not in use.

If it detects an iPhone in the user's pocket, it will detonate a set of small shaped charges designed to sever the jugular in a quick and humane way.
