Digital might be best way to buy Destiny

by on08 September 2014

Free digital next-gen upgrade

So you have not taken the plunge yet to move from your Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 yet to the next generation Xbox One/PlayStation 4. There is still a lot of life left in those Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles and the majority of the regular yearly titles are coming out for the 360/PS3 and you can play Destiny on these systems, so there isn’t a reason to upgrade just yet.

Well if playing Destiny is in your plans, you might want to rethink how you are going to purchase Destiny because Bungie has announced that if you buy the digital download version of the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 version of Destiny, you will be able to upgrade to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 version when you get your new console at no charge. Yep, that’s right buy it on the 360 or PS3 digital and then upgrade to the digital version on the Xbox One or PlayStation 4 for no charge. Of course you there are no cross-platform upgrades, so if you buy the digital version on Xbox 360, you can only upgrade to the digital version on the Xbox One.

In addition Bungie has already announced the ability to transfer your Guardians, progress, stats, and gear over to the next-gen consoles when you upgrade. In addition the upgrade also covers the Digital Guardian Edition and the Expansion Pass, so that will come over as well when you upgrade. (So long as that you had already purchased it on the previous platform.)

We are not sure if this is an indication of things to come in the future with more developers and publishers offering gateways to upgrade as well as free upgrades if you elect to purchase the digital edition. We think it is a great idea, but we doubt that it will become the standard, although it really would be nice if this was the policy for all of your digital game purchases going forward that can be upgraded. It seems rather unlikely that everyone will be following in the footsteps of Bungie, but rest assured that developers and publishers will be watching. Maybe what we will see next is an upgrade fee, instead of the free upgrade?
