Preview comes today

Microsoft held its big Windows focused event on Tuesday and for the first time the company showed the successor to Windows 8.0 / 8.1. The new Windows developed under the codename Windows Threshold is now known as Windows 10.

Windows episode 10, return of the Start menu

Microsoft said that the new Windows is so cool that it deserved a name that is better than Windows 9. Yes, we know it’s a lame explanation.

Joe Belfiore, Corporate Vice President, Operating Systems Group at Microsoft said that the return of Start menu is intentional as Microsoft has millions of customers who stuck with Windows 7 and never wanted to upgrade to Windows 8 or 8.1. Joe is well known for his haircut and running Windows Phone press events. As of today Microsoft's phone operating system didn’t exactly change the world, but it is a good platform.

Windows 7 look

Microsoft said that the Windows 10 look, reminiscent of Windows 7, is intentional and Windows 8 should run devices from 4 inches to 80 inches.

Windows 10 has one more thing that Windows 7 / XP lovers loved - you can run your Store apps windowed. Since we are currently typing on a machine that runs Windows 7, we don’t have to say much more about our preference, but we do run Windows 8.1 on some computers around us.

Windows Product Family 10

Windows 10 supports multiple desktops, there is a new task view button and overall it feels like a big apology for messing with the old layout and trying to force people into using a touch-based operating system after running generations of desktop friendly Windows. Microsoft tried to break from the tradition set by generations of Windows 98, XP, 7 users. We don’t want to mention Millennium Edition, Vista or Windows 8, the three great failures of Redmond.

Moving away from Windows 8 UI concept

It is not all good news for Windows 7 diehards, as the Windows 10 Start menu is a fusion of the old Windows 7 start menu and Windows 8 tiles. You will have to learn to live with it, as you can kill most of the tiles. Search is back on the start menu and start bar. You can now snap a Windows application easier than before and you can now have four apps snapped on the same screen.

This is also a first Windows to launch under Satya Nadella the new CEO and we will see if he got the house in order following the departure of the shy and retiring Steve Ballmer. Nadella will be remembered for firing 18,000 people or 15 percent of company’s global workforce.

Some 12,500 of them were Nokia veterans brought on board by Ballmer and his buddy Stephen Elop. Wall Street liked this decision as Microsoft went from slightly below $42 per stock to $46+.
