Apple announces Haswell Mac mini

by on16 October 2014

Starts at $499

We knew the names and rough specs of the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3, as well as most of the stuff about the iMac 27 with the new 5K display, but we didn’t see that many rumours about the Mac mini update.

Core i5 starts at $499

This living room computer got updated, too, so new entry level version starts at $499, or $100 less than its predecessor. It packs a 1.4GHz dual core Core i5 processor, 4GB of memory, 500GB mechanical drive, Intel HD 5000 series graphics and of course Yosemite.

The runner up comes with a 2.6GHz dual-core Core i5 CPU, 8GB RAM, 1TB hard drive, Intel Iris graphics and Yosemite OS. It will sell for $699, branded as the 2.6GHz Mac mini. The king of the hill is the 2.8GHz Mac mini. This one comes with a 2.8GHz Core i5 dual core, 8GB RAM, 1TB fusion drive, Iris graphics and Yosemite OS.

All three feature 4th generation Intel processors and it is safe to expect a 14nm update next year, with Broadwell inside. They also come with Thunderbolt 2 and USB 3.0 support and Apple is so nice it will even throw in a power cable in the box.

They all share the same dimensions – 1.4 inches (3.6 cm) Height x7.7 inches (19.7 cm) Width x 7.7 inches (19.7 cm) Depth and weight between 2.6 pounds (1.19kg) to 2.7 pounds (1.22kg).

Top spec i7 and TB flash for $2,199

We managed to max out the iMac mini with a 3GHz Core i7 CPU with 3.5GHz Turbo Boost option, 16GB RAM, 1TB flash drive and we landed at a whopping $2,199.00 mini desktop price.
