Good news for all Xperia Z users

Just days after Google officialy announced the new Andorid 5.0 Lollipop update, Sony announced on its blog that it is bringing the newest Android version to its entire Xperia X series. The first updates will land on the Z3 and Z2 line starting in early 2015, while other phones will follow later.

"We’ll be making Sony Mobile’s Android “L” upgrade available for the entire premium Z series: including Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1S, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3v, Xperia Z3 Compact and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact. Sony Z Ultra Google Play edition devices will be first up – we’ll be back with more details on that soon," Sony stated on its blog.

This is very good news for Sony customers who own Xperia Z series phones, but also good news for the fragmented Andoid platform in general, as many vendors are still struglling to keep up with updates. Sony decided to follow in the footsteps of Motorola and HTC, who became one of the first Andoid manufacturers to announce that they will be bringing Android 5.0 updates to their current products.

It should be noted that Google's decision to continue supporting relatively old Nexus models, such as the Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 2012, is a sign that the company is looking to extend software support to much older hardware.
