Windows 8.1 + year of Office 365 to fight Chromebooks

HP recently announced a series of affordable notebooks under new Stream branding. This series was tailored to fight cheap Chromebooks and despite its $199 price tag it offers a decent spec, Windows 8.1 and free Office 365 Personal for one year.

The 11-inch version comes in horizon blue, or orchid magenta colours and is powered by an Intel Celeron N2840 processor with 2GB DDR3L memory, 32 GB solid state storage and 1TB OneDrive Cloud Storage for one year. The battery can last up to 8.25 hours, according to HP. The dual-core Celeron runs at 2.16GHz while the 11.6-inch display has a 1366x768 pixel resolution. The notebook has one USB 3.0 and one USB 2.0 port, WLAN support, measures 8.10 x 11.81 x 0.78 inches and weighs 2.8 pounds.

A larger version called Stream 13 has a 13.3-inch 1366x768 pixel display, weighs 3.4 pounds, measures 9.02 x 13.12 x 0.77 inches and has 7.75 hours battery life. It comes with two USB 2.0 and one USB 3.0 slot and sells for $229.99. Prices for both machines include free shipping. The Celeron N2840 is based on Bay Trail 22nm silicon and according to Intel's own website the processor alone sells for a whopping $107.00, as long as you don’t buy hundreds of thousands and get a special treat from Intel, like HP does.

In case that 13.3 inches and Atom processors don’t cut it for you, there is a 14-inch version powered by an AMD quad-core A4 6400T that sells for $299. This quad-core CPU runs at 1.0GHz by default and 1.6GHz with the help of AMD’s Turbo feature. We mentioned this one back in August.

HP promises 6.5 hours battery life, AMD Radeon R3 graphics, four Beats Audio speakers, Keyboard island with clickable trackpad, brushed aluminium metal deck and aluminium top cover which is not a bad deal for $299 notebook with Windows and year of Office 365.
