Will launch Nova at CES 2009 in January

As we told you a few weeks back, Palm is really struggling these days, and while the Centro has been helping the company keep its head above water, it would appear that Palm is prepared to bet the farm on their next generation OS, which is known as Nova.

While no one really knows much about Nova, what we do know now is that Palm plans to introduce it at CES in January. The Nova project has been spearheaded by Jon Rubinstein of Apple fame. Rubinstein came to Palm in 2007 and he has been in charge of product development during this time. We have to suggest that we will see the first real fruits of his labor at Palm during their CES launch.

What we do know about Nova is less than what we don’t know about it. We do know that it is graphical and it is designed to be an OS to bridge the gap between devices like the BlackBerry and the iPhone, while it will be targeted at both business and home market spaces.

While no one is actually saying it, we have to think that we will see the introduction of a new phone from Palm, as well, that will be running the Nova OS. No one really knows what it looks like or what kind of abilities that it will offer.

In our estimation this is pretty much the end of the line for Palm. They will really need to make a splash with Nova and get people excited about it quickly in order for them to have a chance to gain a foothold in this market space again. Even if they are successful with the Nova launch, there is no assurance at this point that it will sell. It is going to have to deliver a lot in order to get everyone that has purchased an iPhone want to give it up for something new.
