Apple said to be looking at the home server space

Several sources claim that Apple is either looking very closely at the home server market space or revising their current Time Capsule platform to add more features to move into this market space.

With the recent buzz about a variety of home server and the expanded usability of NAS solutions, Apple could be thinking that the time has come for them to get into this market space with a product that could offer file sharing, picture archiving, and, of course, a centralized iTunes music database and storage.

The latest that some of our moles are suggesting is that Apple will launch a revised version of the Time Capsule platform at MacWorld that will add a ton of new functionality. The box would continue to be based on the ARM platform rather than an Intel configuration.

At this point from what we are hearing it could be purely speculation, as we don’t have a lot to go on here and the key for a product like this to be successful will be in the ability to make it usable for the average user; and to develop this kind of interface and handholding takes time. It could happen, but if it does, we think it is likely not to be available for at least a little while. This will give everyone who wants one time to save up to buy one.
