May know how to design a $500 netbook, after all

Although Steve Jobs himself suggested that Apple does not know how to build a $500 computer that isn’t a piece of junk, speculation seems to be rife again that Apple is working on a touchscreen netbook that is said to be in the 10-inch range.

Our sources are telling us that Apple has been talking to partners in Taiwan about the manufacturing and parts pricing for such a device. While this news does not alone equal a netbook on the horizon, it does seem that speculation is now in full effect again.

According to the latest whispers, the rumored Apple netbook would be slated to appear during the summer if the latest reports are true. Of course, with the current economic climate most companies are looking to create new sources of revenue and a new netbook should have the potential to do this for Apple. The real question is whether Apple is willing to lose potential sales on other lower-end products whose sales might be cannibalized with the release of a netbook.
