Gets into online storage with Wuala

Although the LaCie website being down at the time of publishing, it seems like LaCie has merged with a company called Caleido Inc which runs an online storage service called Wuala. This sort of makes sense, as LaCie has focused heavily on on-site storage so far, but this move should allow them to expand into new markets.

LaCie is more well known for its designer storage devices than its high-end solutions, but the company offers external storage enclosures with capacities of several Terabytes, yet LaCie has until now not been able to offer any kind of online backup solutions for its customers.

For Wuala's current customers nothing will change, it's business as usual and it will be interesting to see what new products and solutions this merger can bring forth. Wuala is looking at expanding, but will remain at its head quarters in Zurich, Switzerland.

There's a short press release posted on Wuala's blog, but that's all the details we have at the moment.
