Microsoft confirms that this is the case

All of the speculation and rumors that Gearbox was working on Halo 4 came crashing down today, as Microsoft has now confirmed that for the record Gearbox is not working on a Halo title for Microsoft. The news came via the Halo Wayport Twitter account, and we have been able to confirm from other sources that this is the case.

Rumors and speculation had been running rampant, because gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford wrote about a huge project that the studio was starting in the same time frame as it was announced that Bungie would be separating itself from Microsoft. It seems that many were just putting two and two together to equal Halo 4.

From what we are hearing now, the big project that Pitchford was speaking of was the now-aborted Duke Nukem title that never materialized. The studio still has a lot on its plate with Borderlands and Brothers in Arms, as well as Aliens: Colonial Marines.

While the studio might have another project that they are working on which is yet to be announced, it is unusual for Microsoft to deny a rumor in this manner unless they had a reason to do so. Make of it what you will, but it might be nothing more than some gamesmanship by Pitchford.
