Re-branding comes later

We’ve learned that the Geforce 8800GS will stay alive for a while longer, at least until Nvidia's partners get rid of their stock.

Nvidia loaded a lot of Geforce 8800GS with a good price onto its partners' shoulders. The cheapest ones you can find in Europe will cost you €87 or a bit more, and even a heavily overclocked XFX card will cost just slightly over €100, at least in Germany.

In the U.S. you can find 8800GS cards for $129.99 or $99.99 after mail-in rebate, which is again a great price. We are, of course, mentioning the best-case scenario prices, not the average ones.

Therefore, for the time being Geforce 8800GS won’t be renamed to Geforce 9600GTO or anything with 9, but at later date this is possible.
