AMD layoffs almost didn?t affect the graphics part

No one we knew, anyway

We were concerned that AMD would let many people of Markham, Ontario go, especially on the graphics side, but we learned that very few graphics people actually got the pink slip.

Over the years we've met a lot of key guys in ATI and we've learned that no one we know actually got fired in AMD's last raid.

So far, up to five percent of planned people got the layoff notice, while an additional five percent will have to go until September, but we have to admit that AMD was really smart about the next round of layoffs.

Hector said that they will let the additional five percent of people go, based on performance, which makes every lazy chap quite concerned, and this is probably the best way to increase the operational efficiency, simply as everyone’s job is in stake.

As graphics is close to finally starting to make money, AMD clearly doesn’t want to shoot itself in that particular leg, and it will leave them be, but don’t be fooled. AMD expects performance from these guys and the upcoming RV770 shows a lot of optimism and the chipset graphics guys have already outdone themselves; and the better and faster 790GX is just around the corner.

However, if you are one of the AMD people with a pink slip, please feel free to contact us with your story.
