Speculation and rumors circulate

Printer manufacturer Lexmark, Inc., based in Lexington, Kentucky, saw its shares increase on Wednesday by nearly 7%. The increase was partly based on Lexmark’s anticipated 3rd Quarter earnings statements and partly based on the speculation that Lexmark may be acquired by computer manufacturer, Dell, Inc.

The Lexmark-Dell takeover rumors have been circulating since June. Neither Lexmark nor Dell had any official comment about the takeover rumors, stating that they do not comment on stories that are based on speculation.

It seems to us that this merger could be a strong possibility, given that Lexmark would be a complementary acquisition for Dell.  Dell does not manufacture printers, and having the Lexmark product line as part of its product offering would give Dell better ability to compete against HP and Compaq, which manufacture both PCs and peripherals, including printers.
