Normally, no manufacturer likes to be in the position of having a lot of back stock of an older model product when a new product hits the streets. Toshiba, however, was able to sell over 90,000 of its HD-A2 second generation HD DVD players this past weekend at the special blow out price of less than US$100.

This might not have been that big of a deal, but these numbers are almost as many Sony BDP-S300 players that have been shipped since last summer. Analysts estimate that Toshiba has sold somewhere in the neighborhood of 256,000 players through July. The figure of 90,000 players that are now being reported many not even include all outlets that were selling the HD-A2 at that price this past weekend.

Right now Toshiba and the HD DVD Promotional Group are not saying much about the sales from this past weekend. Many suspect that Toshiba is waiting to tally all of the numbers to get a more accurate count of the number of players sold before releasing any more information.

The numbers do help the HD DVD format again for Blu-ray, as it has had a significant advantage due to the fact that the Playstation 3 includes a built-in Blu-ray drive.
