The
KDE Community has unveiled the first release candidate for KDE 4.0. According to a press release, this means that the majority of the components of KDE 4.0 are now approaching release quality.

There is still much more to do. The community is still putting the finishing touches on Plasma, the brand new desktop shell and panel in KDE 4. However, the release candidate for the KDE 4.0 Desktop is the first preview of KDE 4.0. It shows off improvements that have taken place all over the KDE codebase.

The Community sees KDE 4.0 as the next generation of its desktop Environment for Unix and Linux workstations. Many newly introduced technologies are incorporated in the KDE libraries that will make it easier for developers to add rich functionality to their applications, combining and connecting different components in any way they want.
