First time for everything

Microsoft
has released its latest service pack for Office 2007 earlier than expected.

The new update adds performance and stability improvements. According to Microsoft, performance increases can been seen in Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint and SharePoint server. Of course, Microsoft also made significant enhancements to attempt to increase the productivity suite’s ability to protect users against malicious code.

It also makes the software more compatible with Windows Server 2008. Microsoft said the download is available now and customers can also order a CD with the update. It will be shifted to automatic update in three months.

At 281MB Service Pack 1 for Office 2007 might be a bit bigger than some imagined, but the changes are more significant under the hood than users and IT shops might expect.

Microsoft has made available a whitepaper on service pack 1 for Office that you can read here.

The service pack was not expected until the early part of next year. It is not clear why Microsoft released it so early.
