Will be held at the L.A. Convention Center

Many predicted that E3 would not be back in 2008 after what is being described as “the disaster in Santa Monica.” Well, it looks like they were wrong, because E3 is going to be coming back in 2008 as the E3 Media and Business Summit that will be held July 15th to the 17th in Los Angeles; and, it will be returning to the Los Angeles Convention Center, the home of previous E3s before the new scaled-down E3 version.

Show organizers are quick to point out that a return to the Los Angeles Convention Center does not signal a return to the show of old. The show will continue to be on an ‘invite only’ basis and it will continue to be a smaller scale show in an effort to control costs. The focus of the show will continue to be targeted at business and press meetings. Many software developers have already announced that while they might continue to do the scaled down E3, they will be putting more effort into other shows, such as CES.

While no specific reference to exhibits and a show floor were made, we suspect that if it returns it will be restricted in some way to make companies compete for attention on a more level playing field. While the old E3 could be a pain, we do miss a lot of the positive things that it did offer. However, last year’s show was a big dud, in our opinion.
