Needs to compete with Dell

Desperate to compete with Dell in the server market, HP has ProLiant server line with the latest Intel Xeon processors under the bonnet. There are some automation and energy management improvements in what will be the largest ProLiant refresh since 2006.

Improvements to the range cover 10 systems and are basically catching up to Dell, which launched new Xeon-powered PowerEdge servers a couple of months ago. HP wants its ProLiant G7s to be building blocks for its converged infrastructure vision and carry automation and power management technologies along with its blade servers.

Around the same time that Dell made its Xeon announcement HP announced new ProLiants powered by AMD’s Opteron processors. Now by adding Xeon's in the mix it has AMD Opteron 6100 series and Intel Xeon 5600 and 7500 processors.

The rest of the package appears to make it easier to connect to networks and storage as well cut down on switches and cable.

There are the usual energy claims which seem to be part of every product announcement these days.
