Intel is releasing an early holiday gift with its announcement today that they will be opening up the development of Fibre Channel over Ethernet with the release of their Fibre Channel over Ethernet solutions for Linux. While still a proposed specification, this will allow Fibre Channel SANs traffic to run over Ethernet by moving the traffic to a single fabric within the datacenter infrastructure.
Intel sees this as a big growth area with the addition of server virtualization and more and more companies moving to or currently using high-end SANs for a primary storage platform. The package can be downloaded now and modified under the terms of the GPLv2 software license. The package does include a “target simulator” that will assist developers in the modification and enhancement of the FCoE stack.
