EMC to add flash drives to offerings

Looking to enhance performance


EMC is said to start selling flash memory-based drives to enhance the performance over regular disk drives in the company’s most recent power performance offerings. The flash drives will be available in some offerings later this quarter.

While the improvement in performance can be as much as 30 times more than that of a conventional hard disk, the price increase over traditional hard disk-based products can be much higher when calculated using the typical cost per megabyte formula.

Still, many companies are seeking higher performance from their storage solutions, and currently flash memory-based products offer some of the best performance increases that are currently available in the storage arena. EMC is just following the trend that other manufacturers have set with their move to offer flash memory storage solutions.
