Social notworking outfit Twitter is offering users better protection from hackers by offering them an encrypted connection . While we would not thought that this was much of a problem, the measure is designed to defend those who access Twitter via unsecured public Wi-Fi networks.

If this happens hackers can use Twitter as an attack vector to steal their passwords. Using the option, users' browsers will connect to Twitter's servers via HTTPS.

Virtually anyone trying to spy on the traffic will see only packets of completely unintelligible data. Twitter said that it hoped to make HTTPS the default setting.
